Untethered Performance in the Age of Wireless

A Multimedia Dialogue-Workshop
2 - 5 pm, Tuesday, May 3, 2005
University of Indiana, Bloomington

Armed with only a cell phone, the artist is free to see, to listen, to report, to critique - to exist in all places at once. Mobile blogging (or moblogging) as narrative becomes a form of untethered performance art that keeps pace with the speed of the moment, that moves with mobility through the public space. This dialogue-workshop demonstrates the technology, techniques, aesthetics and narrative practice of moblogging. Prior to the workshop, Packer will travel through the industrial heartland - an artistic reportage transmitting live imagery, audio and commentary on the decline of America - a moblog tour that will be broadcast in conjunction with the Version '05 Festival in Chicago (April 21 - May 1). The tour is part of the ongoing project, "A Season in Hell," the blog-chronicles of Randall M. Packer, former Secretary and now Secretary-at-Large of the US Department of Art & Technology. On May 3 in Bloomington, he will show the results of the performance and will lead an open-forum with students discussing the role of the artist as mediator and the use of multimedia instruments for social and political transformation.
