Shu
Lea Cheang, once a New York based installation artist/filmmaker/media
activist, is now a cyberhomesteader managing a digital existence. Her
installation work is structured to activate cross-cultural collaboration.
Color Schemes (1990) and Those Fluttering Objects of Desire (1993, Biennial
Exhibition) were both presented at the Whitney Museum of American Art.
In her work entitled Buy
One Get One, Shu Lea "lived" in cyberspace for two months, traveling
through Asia, while museum visitors (at the InterCommunication
Center of Tokyo, Japan) communicated with her from a traditional Japanese
lunch box (bento box) filled with high-tech telecommunications equipment.
Like Shu Lea Cheang's previous work, Brandon,
commissioned by the Guggenheim SOHO for the Web, focuses on gender related
issues and displacement in cyberspace.
