äda'web
äda'web
(named after the legendary 19th Century Lady ada Lovelace, considered
the matriarch of computer programming) was established in the early spring
of 1995 with the goal to provide contemporary artists (visual artists,
as well as composers, movie directors, architects, choreographers, etc),
a station from which they can engage in a dialogue with users of the internet.
Founded by media theorist Benjamin Weil, Šda'web was the first and most
promising Web gallery presenting Net Art by emerging and established contemporary
artists. During the past five years, ädaweb has showcased works by
Julia Scher, Jenny Holzer, Jodi, Doug Aitken, Antonio Muntadas, among
others, along with publishing contextual writings by Weill, Timothy Druckery,
Laura Trippi and others.,
establishing
new criteria for the creation, exhibition, interaction and discussion
of Web-specific artworks. Originally published by Digital City Inc. (subsidiary
of America On-Line), äda'web was donated in 1998 to the Walker Art
Center.
