The Thing

The Thing, directed by Wolfgang Staehle, is one of the pioneering on-line sites chronicling the digital culture. Originally conceived in 1991 during the pre-Web era as a BBS, The Thing made the transitition to a Web-based service in 1995. In the spirit of those early days of virtual communities, The Thing has hosted active threads or subscriber lists including the well known Nettime, which has entries by leading scholars and theoreticians in the field. The site also includes reviews, Net Art works, and a plethora of audio and video projects.
